Saturday, Oct. 7. 1-5 p.m.


Paddling enthusiasts and new paddlers alike will have the opportunity to paddle on Little Grassy Lake during Breaking the Surface, a free community paddling event, Saturday, October 7 from 1-5 p.m. at SIU’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center.  

Touch of Nature will provide everything you need to get out on the water including canoes, kayaks, personal flotation devices and paddles.  Participants are encouraged to bring snacks, water bottles, and water shoes or shoes they don’t mind getting wet. 

Breaking the Surface will also include an appearance by the Illinois Department of Natural Resource’s Voyageur canoe capable of seating 20 people. 

Paddlers are encouraged to bring their own water craft, but must have a Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge sticker or day pass, which will be available for purchase at the event for each boat you bring. 

Below is the schedule of events for Saturday, Oct. 7.  

  • 1-2 p.m. Check in begins

  • 2:00-5 p.m. Paddling instructions for beginners

    • Open paddling on Little Grassy Lake
    • Hiking along Rocky Ledges Trail

Refreshments will be available for purchase throughout the afternoon.  We look forward to seeing you there.
