With over 250 people attending, this was best October Breaking the Surface yet.  We'll have some photo galleries of past Breaking the Surface events coming soon.  Join us again on Saturday, May 6.  

Breaking the Surface provides an opportunity for families and friends alike to learn how to navigate the waters of Little Grassy Lake.

The event is free, open to the public and is an event the entire family will enjoy.  Canoes, kayaks, paddle boards and paddle boats will be available for use.  Paddlers may bring their own boats, but must have a Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge sticker.  Day passes will be available for purchase for each boat you bring.

Free Shuttle Service Available

         A shuttle will from the SIU Arena parking lot to Touch of Nature at 1 and 3 p.m. and from Touch of Nature to SIU at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Below is the tentative schedule of events for Saturday, May 6. 

  • 1-2 p.m. Check in
  • 2:00-5 p.m. Paddling instructions for beginners
    • Open paddling on Little Grassy Lake
    • Hiking along Rocky Ledges Trail

Refreshments will be available for purchase throughout the afternoon.  We look forward to seeing you there.
