The nationally recognized Touch of Nature Environmental Education program isn't just for campers and children. University groups and the community can also take part in and benefit from the programs we offer. We work with a number of different colleges and universities for classroom and student organization support at both the undergraduate and graduate level. We serve Greek organizations, student alumni organizations, University Housing, cultural groups, outdoor adventure groups and orientation programs, just to name a few.
Thanks to the Green Fund, Touch of Nature is able to offer a FREE trail stewardship program to SIU organizations!

Our Programs.
Interpretive Hikes
Our Environmental Education staff leads groups both on and off site which can be tailored toward groups of varied populations and hiking abilities. Introductory programs include hiking along Touch of Nature’s trail system and at nearby Giant City State Park. Other opportunities include exploring areas of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge and along the extreme south end of our property, including the ghost town of Progress, IL, a hike to our Native American Hidatsa-style lodge/wilderness station or even state and federally-managed lands (depending on group size and permit requirements.) Activities that can be woven into our interpretive hiking programs include studying the ancient, pioneer and recent history of Southern Illinois, its geology, plant and animal life, ecology, environmental ethics and much more.
Interpretive Paddling
Paddling is an excellent skill, interpersonal and self-confidence-building exercise, as well as a great way to connect with nature. Located on the shores of Little Grassy Lake, Touch of Nature provides numerous opportunities to put group of various sizes and experience on the water. Programs start with paddling instruction for canoe or kayak (or both) depending on program length, group size and needs/goals. After practicing skills in a protected cove, we then venture out onto the lake. Interpretation can include wetland ecology, lake history, and land management, among other subjects. Along the way we’ll explore the shoreline, watch for wildlife, visit Native American rock shelters, explore a vast lily pad field, paddle up a quarter mile stretch tributary called No Name Creek and much more.
Nightime Programs
Owl Prowl- Spend some time in the classroom learning about the different species of owls that call Southern Illinois home, then join us for a night hike as we hoot up a storm!
Moonlight Paddle- Dip your paddle into some of the most pristine waters in the state of Illinois and enjoy some great stargazing as we take a moonlit paddle across Little Grassy Lake. You are sure to enjoy the symphonic nightlife that resides here at Touch of Nature!
Maple Syrupin'
Join SIU Forestry students and our Environmental Education staff for winter tree identification and physiology, maple sap collection, syruping demonstrations, history, process, and lore. Additional activities including interpretive hiking available depending on your length of visit as well as possibly assisting us with the syrup-making process depending on the timing of your visit, where we are in the process, and if the sap and weather are cooperating.
Trailbuilding
Join us as we work to restore and expand Touch of Nature’s trail system. No experience is necessary; we will teach you how to use the necessary tools properly and safety. All tools and safety equipment will be provided. All you’ll need to bring is your lunch, a water bottle and your hard work! Community Service, Saluki Volunteer Corps and Environmental Ambassador Award hours are available to SIU volunteers. Call us and we’ll work with you to schedule a Trail Stewardship program.
If you don’t see a program you want, please do not hesitate to call or email to ask. We can tailor programs just for you and your group.
