Volunteers are the backbone of the programs and events at Touch of Nature, and without you they wouldn't be possible. Whether you're supporting a special event, assisting with outdoor activities, or helping behind the scenes, your time makes a meaningful impact!
Touch of Nature is Southern Illinois University's outdoor learning laboratory. We would be more than happy to work with your school, group or organization in exploring Touch of Nature's natural beauty or even arrange a visit from our staff.

August Volunteer Day - August 23, 2026
Join us for a Volunteer Day in August dedicated to caring for the Touch of Nature campus. Projects may include trail maintenance, landscaping, facility improvements, and other seasonal tasks that help prepare the grounds for programs and events.
Rocky Ledges Fun Run - September 12, 2026
Support runners and walkers during Touch of Nature's Rocky Ledges Fun Run through the scenic Rocky Ledges trail system. Volunteers assist with registration, water stations, and event setup.
September Volunteer Day - September 20, 2026
Join us for a Volunteer Day in September dedicated to caring for the Touch of Nature campus. Projects may include trail maintenance, landscaping, facility improvements, and other seasonal tasks that help prepare the grounds for programs and events.
Little Grassy Get Down - October 10 and 11, 2026
Little Grassy Get Down is a family-friendly music festival featuring live music, outdoor recreation, vendors, and activities for all ages. Volunteers help with admissions, event setup, activities, and guest services.

Touch of Nature's Haunted Hollow - October 25, 2026
Haunted Hollow is Touch of Nature's annual family-friendly Halloween festival featuring games, activities, hay-rides, and festive attractions. Volunteers may help operate activity stations, parking, greet guests, and event setup.
Feeding Our Community - November 18, 2026
Help to prepare, serve, and distribute meals while supporting neighbors experiencing food insecurity in the Carbondale community with Feeding Our Community. This program brings together volunteers to make a meaningful impact through service.

Maple Syrup Festival - March 20 and 21, 2027
Maple Syrup Festival is one of Touch of Nature's signature annual events, featuring pancake breakfasts, maple syrup demonstrations, nature activities, vendors, and family-friendly entertainment. Volunteers assist with event setup, activities, guest services and other event operations.
Great Cardboard Boat Regatta - April 24, 2027
A long standing SIU tradition, the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta challenges participants to build and race boats made primarily from cardboard. Volunteers help with event setup, registration, and cheering on our lovely competitors.
