Nestled in the path of totality, Touch of Nature, offers participants a unique opportunity to not only witness the phenomenon but also surround themselves in the beauty of nature.
- When and Where is the Solar Eclipse Weekend Taking Place?
The event is set to unfold its magic from April 5th to April 9th. Your journey begins with check-in on April 5th, starting at 3 PM at Camp II in Touch of Nature. Please see our outline of events for more information.
- How do I Register for the event?
Registration is located on Touch of Nature's official website, ton.siu.edu. Once on our website, navigate to the page titled "2024 Solar Eclipse at Touch of Nature" and click on the "Register Now" button to secure your tickets for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
- Are pets allowed?
Pets are permitted at Touch of Nature as long as they are leashed. Pets are NOT permitted indoors. Only service animals will be permitted indoors. For those looking to bring their pet with them, please check out this list of local boarding options. We recommend inquiring about boarding as soon as possible due to the increased number of people in the area.

Yes, a registration fee ensures an all-inclusive experience for attendees. This fee, offered at a per-person rate, covers not only lodging but also includes 9 meals throughout your stay, along with access to a range of engaging programs offered during the weekend.
- What activities are planned for the weekend?
The weekend will offer a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, live music, guided hikes, paddling on Little Grassy Lake, as well as climbing opportunities.
- What safety measures are in place for viewing the solar eclipse?
Your safety is our priority. Each member of a registered group will receive a pair of eclipse viewing glasses as part of their weekend package.
- Can I bring my own telescopes or binoculars for the eclipse viewing?
Certainly! Feel free to bring your personal telescopes or binoculars to enhance your eclipse viewing experience.
- Are there accommodations available at Touch of Nature for attendees coming from out of town?
Absolutely! On-site accommodations consist of bunkhouse-style cabins, providing a cozy and communal setting. Unless a family or group reserves the entire cabin, additional guests will share the same cabin. Private reservations of cabins come with discounted pricing, ensuring flexibility for various preferences.
- What should I bring with me for the weekend?
Prepare for the full eclipse weekend experience by packing comfortable clothing, outdoor gear suitable for guided hikes, essential toiletries, and any personal items you may need. Don't forget your camera to capture the special moments, and most importantly, bring a curious spirit! Those staying in cabins or lodges should be sure to bring their own bed linens or sleeping bag as linens are not provided.
- Are meals provided during the event?
All meals will be served at Freeberg Hall in Camp II, where we will serve a delightful array of meals. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner from April 6th to 8th. Please note that meals will not be provided on April 5th or April 9th.
- Do you have any policies regarding fires, grills, and camp stoves?
Touch of Nature does have policies regarding the use of fires, grills, and camp stoves. See below for these policies:
- Fires may only take place in the designated fire rings located througout Touch of Nature property.
- Camp stoves are permitted but must not be left unattended while in use. Please be sure to tidy up the area and dispose of any trash or waste properly.

- Can I bring my family and children to the solar eclipse weekend?
Absolutely! This event is designed to be inclusive and family-friendly. We encourage attendees of all ages to join in the experience, and children 2 and under are welcomed without any charge.
- Is there a rain plan in case of inclement weather?
Anticipating the unpredictability of weather, we have contingency plans in place. In the event of inclement weather, we'll transition to indoor activities and workshops, ensuring the event remains engaging and memorable for all.
- Can I register for a single night stay?
No, the experience is crafted as a weekend package that include a stay from April 5-9th, 9 meal between April 6-8th and all activities over the course of the weekend. Single-night stays are not available.
- What are check-in and check-out times?
Check-in begins on April 5th at 3 PM and extends until 10 PM. As the weekend concludes, check-out is scheduled for 10 AM on April 9th.
- What is the waitlist policy for sold-out accommodations?
For those seeking accommodations that are fully booked, a waitlist will be available. Register as usual through the portal on our website, which will not process payment but add you to the waitlist. If a spot becomes available, Touch of Nature staff will promptly contact individuals on the waitlist. Payment will be due in full 2 weeks after being taken off of the waitlist.
- Are we free to leave as we please throughout the weekend?
Of course! Guests staying at Touch of Nature over the course of the weekend should feel free to come and go as they please. We encourage guests to enjoy their time in southern Illinois and see all we have to offer!
